I just recieved a laptop to use for business while I am traveling. I am supposed to find out if it is capable of the work I need to do on it. How do I check if my computer has a lot of memory, is fast enough and will be able to open big applications and still perform? And when I check these things, what do the abreviations mean?

Install something like SISOFT SANDRA software and try the performance tests. You will get all details regarding your system.

Best of Luck.

Your way of certain means...? Put it this way compare what you have on your system to the certain games you want to play. That would be the best choice. Almost every game out on the market for computer will have a minimum and recommended specifications printed on them so you know or not if it will run on your system. windows 2k/xp users just goto start, run, type in dxdiag, and push enter this usually gives you the run down of your system, or you can goto Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click on System Information. Heck there many ways you can check. There are even 3rd party software you can download to check what your running.
