Depends on what you want to dowload. Cnet and Zdnet have some free downloads and some stuff you have to pay for. They offer a lot of different things to download for example games, desktop enhancements, security software and more. As long as you are accepting files from the internet you are at risk of getting something. Scan files before opening them is the only real way you can take action to prevent getting infected with a virus.

since most free downloading is p2p file sharing theres always a chance for a virus that could be with a downloaded file
so the only thing you could really do is get a anti virus program like norton

depending on what you are trying to download.. try torrent sites like torrentbox.com
however, you have to play with caution. Get a copy of anti virus, ant- spyware before / after download, then you will be safeguarded
