When I was at uni, I found that if I played classical music in the background that I was more focussed rather than playing anything from the rock genre. Remember the quote: Music soothes the savage beast! :)

My daughter has ADHD and last year she was not on medication, but her teacher noticed that her behavior seemed to improve (she was more focused, not so squirmy) when certain music (such as classical) was playing. The thing is, music with a faster tempo speeds our heart rate- it's exciting! So quieter music makes us feel calm, and when we're calm it's easier to be in the right frame of mind to take in information.
