Aside from the monumental task of amending the Constitution to do this (basically Amending the current Federal system out of existence), how do you propose governing each "region?"
Different States have fifferent geographical, demographic, and geological bases, and one "set of laws" would not cover all.
Not to mention, without states, "popular vote" would decide the Presidency, and no regions other than the former New York, California, and Texas would ever see a Presidental Candidate.
But if you guys who live in States want to give up your rights/responsibilities to govern yourselves, go ahead - we Commonwealths will just take over...

That's one small step for man, one giant leap for totalitarianism...
This would basically let (make) our President the utmost Supreme leader of the land, since there would be no sub-levels (governors, state congresses) which would govern the people. A LOT more pressure would be put on the current Congress, and they'd have to pass sweeping laws which, while required in some area, might not be required or even dangerous to other areas.
Fidel Castro & Kim Jongg Ill have governments similar to the one you're proposing.

There would be a blaze of gunfire. Nice idea!
Can't see Texas being too interested in this idea though???
They really are, actual different STATES a bit like the former soviet union,. What's more likely to happen is that they go the other way, and end up going their separate ways, also like the USSR. It will give them a chance to shoot each other. America will destroy itself from within. I mean what exactly do , say, Louisiana and California have in common, for instance? Apart from, oh yeah, their love of , ahem. "freedom"....?

No it could never happen. Look at Massachusetts versus Texas you telling me those two states would be over joyed to share each others laws or common ground? We all forget how powerful our friendly local/state politicians are and how they just love to lose their control over their fiefdoms.

Frightening.
But yes, as the rights of individual states erode, and federal powers intrude more and more into our lives, we feel the effect of this system in our daily lives.
And the farther away from you that your money is spent, the more it is mishandled.

without the independence of the states, this country would not be what it is...refuting the rights of states would actually be a traitorous act
