What kind of dance competition? I can only speak to ballroom, but there technique is important. It's better to do more basic patterns well than to do fancy patterns poorly. And personality will get you noticed. In "fun" dances like quickstep or cha cha, an appropriate big smile (genuine, not the painted-on smile that's so obvious) is a big plus, where it would be out of character for a tango. But I'd say go for the dancing and the passion you have for it, and let the rest take care of itself. If you're the amateur half of a pro-am pair, your teacher will coach you on this.

Your technique is very important. Hitting the mark and making each move accurate. Costuming is very important and plays a vital part in competition. Have fluid motion and proper beat and timing, correct movements for the style of dance---Don't do a waltz to hip hop music, etc. Grace regardless of what dance is important. Ease of motion is important. Making it look like it flows and you are enjoying yourself is important. Smile at the judges when you finish, too. Be mannerly.

-smile A LOT
-get a cool costume
-have a lot of attitude, on stage

-don't let ANY of your mistake show

-make sure your technique is good!
-look at the judges at least once, but not a lot!
-and just dance your heart out!

only do things that you are good at.

don't try to do some impressive dance move that you can't hit.

appearance is important.
