You can purchase pre-made polymer clay canes at the craft or art supply store and slice them thinly to apply to the entire outside surface of the bottle then bake in the oven according to the package instructions. These make beautiful and very original vases or candle holders.

Make wine bottle lamps.
Make sure bottle is clean and dry.
Have a hole drilled out in bottom , get lamp guts from Lowes, that fit the top of bottle head and wa, la , a lamp ! get a shade that looks good with the label on bottle, and fits nice as you do not want a big shade for a thin bottle. Keep the label on, as it makes it look nice

I take the labels off and then buy candles. But the candles in and light them let them melt all the way down the side of the bottles. Then put a new candle in and give them as gifts.

Not a great gift that you can wrap or anything....but I've seen a whole patio made with wine bottles buried upside down so all you see are the different colored bottoms.

you can use them as vases and get fake red flowers to put in them. i'm assuming that the bottles are green so that you have the traditional holiday colors.

If you have access to a kiln, you can flatten them to make cheese trays/spoon rests. (http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_wood_glass_etching/article/0,1789,HGTV_3348_4149958,00.html)
Or you can follow the directions here:
http://www.make-stuff.com/recycling/bottles.html
to cut the necks off to make vases.
Then you can etch designs into them with glass etching supplies.
