Check your electric bill for the rate per kilowatt hour.
If you are interested in the electrical consumption of appliances throughout your house get a meter such as Kill A Watt to take some measurements. I purchased mine from eBay.

Look at the rating plate on the appliance, every 1000 watts/1kw will cost about 12p per hour to run, so if for example a heater is marked 2000 watts or 2kw it will cost about 24p per hour if on full, and half that cost for half heat. A 100 watt bulb will cost 12p for 10 hours. (10x100watts =1000watts). Get the exact cost per unit from your electricity bill.

you are right. heat = high electrical energy. eg. heaters, toasters
also fast rotating machinery. eg lawn mower, washing mashine
low power is electronics eg laptop, anything digital, dvd player
tv's differ they use capacitors. this rule of thumb saves checking the manual of all appliances
