The typical cost is more like $50. You have to fill out some paperwork, provide good ID and go before the court and swear that you aren't doing it for an illegal purpose or to avoid debts.

or you could just keep your first name and only ask your friends to call you something else. like a nickname.
why would one want to change one's own name? what is the purpose?
