Guitar, piano, and violin are all difficult to master, but guitar is easy to get started on. I suggest you at least try all three, then go with the one that you like the most. Violin is the most portable, but not all styles of music use violin. Piano is the least portable, but you can use an electronic piano to make it a more portable instrument (although they do not sound quite as good). Guitar is used in pretty much every style of music except the truly exotic stuff. I play guitar, but every serious musician should have at least one keyboard. Also, there are a lot of guitar players out there, so if you want to "compete" in the musical marketplace you have to be pretty good if you are going to be a lead guitarist, but the guitar can be used as a "backing" instrument for a vocalist that just strums a few chords. Best advice is try them all and stick with the one you like the most.

I would say if you have never played an instrument before, take piano. I've been playing piano since age 4 and I'm in college now, and since then I've picked up percussion instruments as well. If you are at all interested in becoming a serious musician one day, piano is essential. Not that you have to be an expert on it, but that you should know the basics of piano. Music theory is always taught using piano as a guideline-- you can leard chords, scales, all sorts of things, because you're not limited to playing one note at a time like on a wind instrument. But any of those three are great choices =)

they are all nice. I learned all three of these.
guitar- is nice cause you can sing along. or play classical or many other styles.
violin- is nice , the more you practice, the better you get.But I have never been able to comfortably sing along when I played the violin
Piano- is nice you can sing while you play, or you can accompany someone else.
In college there was a saying, You like what you know. The more you learn to play an instrument , the more you will like it. Pick the one you feel most comfortable with.

Piano players get a much more complete vision of the music, and can jump to new instruments quicker than any other.

Guitars are generally more affordable, portable, and pop culture accepted.

Can't buy Violin strings at wal-mart, but you can get guitar strings.

No one takes a piano camping.

I was told that if you can play piano, you can learn any instrument. I would say that's true because I took piano and later on, guitar. I also played French horn for a little bit in middle school. For both horn and guitar, my knowledge from piano came in handy.

So piano is a good base skill to have.

it depends on how serious of a musician you want to be and what type of music you want to play. personally, out of the 3 i would choose piano, because there's much more substance to piano music, and it's easier to write your own music on a piano (so i've heard, anyway). guitar is a close second, though.
