In any on-line multiplayer game what is the maximum number of people who can be on and fight at the same time?

This includes all types of online multiplayer games, but i wanted to know specifically about console games online, like xbox live and the new ps3 online system. I also only want to know about mass multiplayer games, like war games for example.

Ok so the general idea is that it depends on the game and graphics etc. So what game has the maximum number of people on at the moment? Similar to the battles on Guid Wars (if you have heard of it) but with a lot more people on at the same time.

Depends on what's running it, what game it is, who's running the server, lots of different variables. But, I know that for EverQuest, a PC game, there can be, at any given time, over a million people playing at once without causing problems to the servers, and that game was made in '99, so technology has probably improved since then.

It's constrained by the hardware involved and the game design. Theoretically there need not be any constraint at all. MMPs are "Massively Multiplayer" games and designed for effectively unlimited players.

There probably are some literally limits, like 2 gigs of players, but for all intents and purposes, no, no limits.
