Use wood, not coal. Start with kindling (small sticks, bark, paper trash, etc.), then set the wood in the shape of a teepee.

My parents used to use some firelighters that looked like really condensed styrofoam, and smelled like a gas station. They work well and don't leave a mess behind.

I use wood in mine, works great, especially when it's free!
