When you wash a load in a top load washer, you use detergent to break up stains and loosen soil. The agitator (thing in the middle) takes the clothes from the top of the basket and pushes them down to the bottom. At the bottom, fins help knock the dirt out and keep the water moving to wash out stains. All of the dirt falls to the bottom. All of the actual cleaning takes place at the bottom of the machine. That's why there are so many holes at the bottom of the basket.

With a front load machine, the washer mixes soap with water and showers it on to the clothes. The tumbling action helps make sure that all of the clothes get saturated with detergent. The soap enzymes break up stains and loosen soil. The machine then showers clean water on top of the load to rinse the soap out.

Both top load and front load washers drain from the bottom to extract the water, soap, soil and stains. Both machines also rely on "roll-over" which is the process of the clothes going from the top of the load to the bottom and back up again. Front load washers have better roll-over because they tumble the clothes. Because of that, they tend to give the best cleaning.

If you want to get clothes clean in the bath tub, try adding soap and water. Instead of moving the clothes with your hands or feet, tumble them with your hands. After you've washed them, drain the tub and turn on the shower with cold water. Rinse each article by hand under the shower. Presto! Your clothes are just as clean as out of the washer.

The washing machine agitator (thing in the middle) is designed to move the water and clothes through the machine in the most productive manner. It only spins when rinsing and draining. When the clothes move through the machine they rub against each other and are also hit with the moving agitated water. There is far more movement than you can produce with your hand or foot and there is more force of water.

Clothing needs to be moved around in the washer for an allotted amount of time to remove soil and germs. I have a unit that attaches to my washer that eliminates the need for hot water, detergent, bleach, or fabric softener and my clothes come out cleaner, fresher and 99.9999 percent germ free. There is no residue left in the clothing which can cause itchy skin. Also there are no chemicals that cause pollution put back into our water ways.

Machines tend to be more thorough and the clothes get washed for a longer period of time.....do you wash your clothes for 35 min straight?

It could be a little precarious getting in and out of your 'tub' but if you are willing to go to the effort, good for you and enjoy your 'bath' oh ... and in case you had not thought of it ... don't add the laundry soap until you are out of your 'bath' you could get serious skin problems from bathing in laundry detergent!

The washer is different than the bath. It spins and cleans it a special way.

The washing machine has "cycles" it rinses the clothes, then drains... then fills.. and drains.

So the water does get dirty but is drained out.
