Perhaps because they use the color to attract females. Or, since females are more essential to reproduction, it is beneficial for the females to blend in with the environment to avoid predators.

This is often the case in more animals than just the butterfly. (yes, they are animals).
One theory on 'sexual dimorphism' (differences between the sexes in appearance) has to do with the evolution of elaborate coloration as well, sometimes, as mating behaviour by the male in order to attract a mate. Most female animals expend a far greater amount of energy in producing offspring than the male. As a result, the female often chooses a male she perceives to be well equipped to provide for the offspring or perceived to be of 'superior genetic material".

most male animals have colors to get the females.the females are stuck with the boring colors like brown so they blend in with their nests. i'm not sure why a female butterfly would need that aspect though. they pick whichever one is the best looking!
