I vaguely remember reading somewhere that in the Ancient World, there were women who were expected to weep or grieve on demand.

I'm pretty sure there was a term used to describe these designated weepers. Does anyone know it?

This website mentions the Ancient Greek practice of hiring extra women to participate in a funeral procession as designated weepers: http://www.ncl.ac.uk/shefton-museum/greeks/death.html
