My dog is 1 1/2 years old (beagle) and my cat is around 6 years old. They don't get along at all. We have to separate the house with baby gates, but I would like to be able to have my dog and cat run freely through the house without chasing each other and fighting.

They are going to have to settle this for themselves. Make sure that the underdog or undercat has a safe place for retreat and put all your breakables in a safe place. If your beagle is badly scratched, he may need a vet's care, especially if it is an eye or nose injury. This might not be solvable to your liking. But they are the ones to do it. If you don't like the possible consequences, keep the baby gates.

I have the same problem. i have 4 cats. A mother, the sister of the mother, and two children of the mother. She had 5 but one ate a pill and died, and the other two we had to sell. My dad isn't a cat lover lets just say. Anyway, i just got a puppy. She is now 6 months old and we have had this problem for the 3 months we have had her and I have learned not to give one more attention than the other. So get two of them, set them down, pet both of them and watch tv or something. They will learn eventually.

Let them be in the same room when you are around. And try to discipline them verbally.
Feed them next to each other, and do not tolerate one attacking the other. Everytime, one tries to attack the other while feeding, put the agressor into a lockable room, so that he or she learns, that the direct consequence of agression is exclusion from the community.
When you see that one is approaching to attack try to stopp him or her by throwing for example a pair of soxs at the agressor, so that he or she gets a little shock, without associating you as a person with the little pain (well make sure you don't throw anything that could hurt your pets, you just want them to stopp), or shock, but only the situation.

According to websites I've read, you should be able to swap thier blankets and they will get used to each others smells. Poppycock! I have had my new kitty for 6 months and he still torments old Kitten! I think they'll just always do that, but instead of keeping them apart you should let them fight it out and establish a heirarchy in the house.
