Before the invasion of Afghanistan and then again for Iraq I wrote a letter to the President, my two Senators and my Congressional Representative... If we as a nation deem it necessary to invade a country, then lets support our troops by doing the following:
1) Increase taxes to pay for the war and reconstruction
2) Start the draft with only health and age exceptions
3) Start rationing to keep all resources available for accomplishing mission

If a war is necessary, then our economy and we as a people should be mobilized for it.
WHY DIDN'T WE DO THIS?

Yes, I support our troops.
I think the invasion of Iraq was a horrible mistake, but that certainly is not the fault of the troops.
Very interesting points you make, although the rationing of resources I feel would be unnecessary.
I would agree with your other two suggestions however.

I couldn't agree more. This is the first war we've fought, while actually LOWERING taxes, primarily for the weathly of course (ie mister 33% tax bracket above).

I see as many others such a massive disconnect between the troops and the american people, in the sense that less than 1% of Americans are related or know of service men or women in Iraq. We have not been asked to make any sacrifice, not in taxes nor rationing. Although I don't agree with the universal draft, I do believe it may be needed to close that wide divide between our service men and women and public opinion.

I think the most important phrase in your question is "If a war is necessary".

I would say that is the reason society wouldn't want to take the three steps you mentioned. If society saw a real need, I am sure more people would be willing to sacrifice.

I do not support war, so I guess that means I do not support our troops. A decision to join the military is a decision to go to war. Just remember, we did not decide as a whole to go to war. Why should I suffer the ramifications for something I didn't agree with from the beginning?

Of course I support the troops. They are doing their jobs. They are doing what countless other men & women of this country wouldn't dream of doing themselves. Kudos to them for standing up and fighting for the people of our country, even for all the lunatics that seem to lurk on Yahoo Answers.

I AGREE WITH YOU BUT HOW MUCH HIGHER ARE WE GOING TO BE TAXED BEFORE THE GOVT TAKES OUR WHOLE CHECK. ARE YOU A DEMOCRAT? I'M IN THE 33% TAX BRACKET 1/3 OF MY WEEKLY COMPENSATION GOES TO THE GOVERNMENT. PERSONALLY I DON'T WANT TO PAY MORE TAXES. THEIR ARE OTHER WAYS TO GO ABOUT RECONSTRUCTION AND PAYING FOR THE WAR WITH OUT RAISING TAXES. HOW ABOUT SELLING SOME OF THE OIL THEY HAVE AND LET THEM PAY FOR THE REPAIR OF THEIR OWN COUNTRY. AND THEY SHOULD PAY SOME REPARATIONS FOR THE USA BEING THEIR WHILE THEY KILL THEMSELVES. THEY WANTED SADDAM OUT NOW IT'S TIME TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE.
