Open your favorite books and look at what they do to make things gripping and exciting. Or just go to the library and open the front page of a bunch of books and put the 'exciting openings' into one pile and the 'eh' openings into another. Compare.

Put some excitement in to the opening paragraph. Then you can go ahead and tell how everybody got there. Start with something like

The planet is dying and you can not stop it.

or

The gun pressed against the side of his head fired.

or

We now know for sure that there is life after death.

Something that grabs people from the first line. Try to avoid "It was a dark and stormy night" even though there was a time that line was great.

I have always found it easiest to just start writing the story and then going back and doing the opening paragraph. Often as you start writing the ideas start flowing and your opening paragraph becomes almost obvious.
