It's all in his head. The ingredients in Tylenol PM are NOT addictive. So if he thinks he can't fall asleep without them--he won't. All it is is Tylenol and Benedryl. That's it.

The dependency is definitely in his head (which is good news). The "sleep" medication in Tylenol PM is really benadryl or diphenhydramine. It's an antihistamine that causes drowsiness yet it's safe and definitely non habit forming. Some pharmacists actually recommend this before trying other sleep medications It's probably safer for him to take benadryl without the tylenol so see if you can get him to switch to plain Benadryl instead until he can ween himself off completely.
Try getting him to be more active during the day, like taking a walk or run in the morning or afternoon but not at night because that'll keep him awake. Taking showers and baths at night can keep him awake too instead of relaxing him. If he's big on caffine, soda, or other sources of sugar have him cut back on those as well. Also a consistant sleep schedule (especially getting up at the same time each day) will help him get back on track.
If he still has trouble have him ask his pharmacist about an over the counter medication call melatonin. It's been greatly proven to help people sleep.

I have to tell you when i was in the Navy that is what I took constantly just to get some shut eye with our crazy hours. Now what had happened is I got really sick flu type sick and it was because of me taking sleep aides, so too bad but it took me about 3 weeks to get over a cold, what i would do is be as active as possible during the day. you have to wear yourself out go running or workout do something active, don't sit on the couch and pig out and not do anything ... I did and I finally got so tired every night that i didn't even notice i wasn't taking them.

Any time you become dependent on a drug, you should not go cold turkey like he did. It simply will not work. He's got to wean himself. This may require him to be cutting his pills into smaller portions to lower the dose. Have him try to wean himself over a month. If he can't get off it, he absolutely must seek professional help...he'll need to find a good psychiatrist. Tylenol is extremely taxing to the liver among other things and he should not be using it on a long-term basis.

He needs to see a dr. I had the same problem and turned out I was hyperthyroid. The dr did give me tylenol pm to take every night until they got my meds worked out. I never got addicted, it's not possible.

yea it does sound like a drug dependency. Be careful becuase you're not suppose to take it for a long period otherwise the body becomes used to it. And eventually, when you do have to take it... the body is so used to it that its like drinking water.
Get him help...
