Sending copies of your book off to various companies will be expensive. I am also writing a book (it is in the making) and the best suggestion I could give you is to look around your area/state and do some research. While doing this you can still be "adding" on to your book. Either way when you get a publisher you will be tweaking your book for months to maybe even years. It will all depend on the length and the subject matter.

Hope that helps!

I think the real questions authors ask themselves is: Should I stop myself from publishing my book?

If you're like most writers, your ego is fragile. I had the experience of sending books to editors, working on them for months that turned into years, only to receive 'No. Thank you' as a response. It's a hard blow no matter how thick your skin is.
Deep down, that's probably what you're afraid of, like most of us. You're probably also afraid of what the public in general will think. What if you've worked on this thing for months, gave your idea all the thought you figured you could bear to give it, molded it day after day, only to be told 'It's no good.' - Very shattering.

On the other hand, you went through the trouble of writing it, so why not give the public a chance to read it? Anybody who went through the process knows writing is not about money. If you reach just three people out there in the world, or perhaps just one, you've done your job.
Best of luck to you.

I have no idea how this works, but i would guess you could send it to various companies, I would also go on-line and see if you can get some hints on how to do this. Just be careful for scams. Good Luck

Well, I figure you never know until you give something a try so I say go for it! :) Good luck to you! I agree to be careful of scams, there are people out there who will do anything to get money. As for companies, I think Tor is one.

I am in the middle of writing a book, and another book of poems. Keep your options open, search around a little, you'll find what your looking for soon enough.

I'm trying to do the same. You should definitely try and submit a query letter once you're done with your manuscript. It can't hurt, and if you get rejected it will only make your skin thicker...Good luck!

Scholastic comes to mind. But then again, keep your options broad.
