Why or why not would you want to be a mercenary the way the Hessians were in the American Revolution?

I can answer both ways.

Why? Because it pays well. Mercenaries are hired soldiers, and if they don't get paid, they don't fight...it's purely a business deal.

Why not? Because mercenaries are generally exposed to the most risks on behalf of their employer. Since they're being paid, they're expected to "earn" it... meaning a higher casualty rate.
