Not sure how to word this question: basically, I'm trying to figure out how to create a contract between two parties for work. The details and terms of the work are written out in the contract, and both parties sign the document. But what steps need to be taken to make the document legally binding? Is it enough just to have the document notarized, or do there need to be witnesses as well? In other words, how do I make the contract "official".

Thanks.

In order for a contract to be valid it has to be legal, show a meeting of the minds, and have some form of consideration. Meeting of the minds means you're both on the same page and understand what each party is required to do. Consideration is what each party receives in return. For example, if it is an employment contract, you receive consideration in the form of compensation and the employer receives consideration in the form of you performing a service. As long as you have those three things a contract is binding whether or not it is signed. Verbal contracts are just as binding as written, just harder to prove if one person tries to back out. Getting it signed by both parties is the best way to show that there is a binding agreement. It doesn't have to be notarized or witnessed, but if that makes you feel more comfortable then have it done. It's "official" when it has the three requirements of being legal, meeting of the minds, and has consideration.
