Chipmunks are just a small members or the squirrel family, so yes chipmunks are a type of squirrel. Often they are called ground squirrels.

The are closely related with both belonging to the order Rodentia and the family Sciuridae, but they are classified in different subfamilies and genera.

they are 2 totally different animals. for one thing chipmunks have much smaller tails.

they say they`re different, but where Iive we have chipmunks that look like squirrls and squirrls that look like chipmunks, but I think squirrls are better climbers and chipmunks are distinctively cuter.
