I have stainless steel appliances as well as a stainless steel garbage can and the cleaner that I have found to work wonders is called, Stainless Steel Magic. I got mine at Lowe's but you could probably get at any major home improvement store or retail store.

I scrub with soap and water when it's really gunky and then use a stainless steel cleaner. Sometimes after I was the trash can with soap and water, plain old rubbing alcohol will also bring out the shine and get rid of streaks. I then double line it with trash bags and verbally chastise those in my house that trashed it in the first place! Have a nice day.

Go to someplace like Bed, Bath and Beyond and get some stainless steel cleaner. Also pick up a stainless steel cleansing cloth so that you can maintain the shine.

There is a special spray cleaner for stainless steel. Look for it in a department store.
