The widow should do whatever she wants. If that is a way for her to grieve, she should definitely do it. However, the reason for the flowers is so that others typically can offer their condolences and the widow with something beautiful to have around her, to let her have a visual of the people that care and are there for her. It is also so that other people can pay for the flowers because the family is paying for the other expenses. Sort of like bringing food to a pot luck so that the hostess doesn't feel she has to provide everything to take stress off after working like hell to clean her house up. However, if the widow wants to have her own flowers, or a certain kind of flower.....that is completely her choice. It is no one elses place to ask or wonder how someone should grieve and how they shouldn't. If she wants to send flowers, encourage her to.

I think that the widow can do whatever she wants to do, but i think more often than not, other people would be sending her the flowers to comfort her and sympathize with her instead of her having to send them to herself.

No there will be a casket cover that the family sends. If she wants to put a ribbon or other item with the flowers, that's a nice touch.I've seen beautiful doves and bows with the spouses nick-name on it.

Yes. Usually the large floral arrangement on top of the casket is from the wife and kids. She also usually buys the boutineer that he can wear.
