Short answer?

All you need to be a producer is an idea and the drive to make it happen. Seriously, it's that simple.

Long answer?

First you need a script. Is one written yet? If not, write it. If you can't write, hire someone to do it for you. Don't even have an idea for a story? Go buy one. Obtain the rights to someone else's story. Option an already written script. Don't see one you like? Pick a book you like and buy the rights to that. Or someone's life story. Or an old television series you want to make into a film. Doesn't matter how you do it, just get a script.

Okay, now what? Well, to make a movie you need money. Are you rich? Pay for the movie yourself. Aren't rich? Well, now you have two options. Make friends with someone who *is* rich and have him pay for the production. Or make friends with a lot of people who aren't rich, but will give you a few bucks to help out. Don't want to be an indie producer? Go to Hollywood and talk to a studio. If they like your idea then *they'll* pay for the production.

Once your movie is in the can, you need a release. First, you need prints - copies of your movie to give to theaters. You budgeted for that earlier, right? And advertising, gotta let people know about the movie, right? If you're indie, that's all your responsibility. If you're studio, there are people to handle it. Either way, guess what... now you're a producer. Welcome to the movies.

(btw - that was all about creative producing. there's also *line* producing, which is more about actual physical production than project development. feel free to email me if you have questions.)

Look up the Directors Guild. They have a program for college grads that is essentially a 2- year apprenticeship in Hollywood, where you work as a Second (or 2nd 2nd) Assistant Director on a bunch of films and make all sorts of contacts with industry people and figure out where you fit into the industry. It's a real ***** to get in, with tests and interviews and all sorts of stuff, but I hear its a great program. I tested one year but I haven't gone back. I think it's called the Director Training Program, but I may be wrong about the name.

Well, the best way is to secure funding. Then you have to know people in the industry and try to get them to all come together. It may be a case of "who you know" being important but it could also be a case of finding a project that is very exciting to a lot of people in which case they will be excited to sign on. Good luck!
