velocity includes the direction the object is moving in

velocity is displacement divided by time, so it has a direction
speed is distance divided by time, therefore it has no direction
for example, if i were to leave my house and go to the store and then return home...my displacement would be zero because i finished where i started, so i would have zero velocity...but i travelled a distance of 1000m in 500s....so my speed is 1000m divided by 500s = 2 m/s
