I am looking for a sealer to put on oak lumber. This lumber is going on a wagon that is going to be outside all the time and is going to be exposed to the elements. I want the sealer to last a long time also.

Spar varnish is good.

I'm not sure why you're using oak, rather than pressure treated pine, but in any case I'd recommend the pressure treated.

I wouldn't use sealer. Maybe you have a reason to go with sealer. I have no wisdom to impart on sealer.

People like stain for outdoors. I prefer paint. If I were choosing stains, I'd use Olympic Premium 596XX Latex. But California California Fressh Coat Velvet would last three times as long.

However, your use on a wagon most closely resembles a deck. So, I would use deck treatment -- Cabot decking stain 1480 opaque or Cabot Solid Color 1880.

I suspect you might love to see the grain on that oak. From what I know -- and I'm sure I don't know everything there is to know -- you have a choice of pretty grain or long lasting.

In case you want to go to the library and check out Consumer Reports tests, I've included the issues below.

Thompson's Wood Sealer or Armorall makes a product also. Any painted on finish i.e. varnish, polyurethane, will eventually peel off in the elements. The wood sealer will work very well. I have it on my wooden fence around my backyard. Repels the rain and the UV rays from the sun.

Hello , used motor oil and diesel fuel mixed , put oil with a roller or brush . I put new oak boards on my 18 foot trailer 8 years ago ... treat it after broads have been expose to the sun and dried out some . I only treated it once a year for the first two years .
I know some of my friends have trailers that have oak or poplar boards that have been treated with same method and have been on twice along as mine .... It smell bad for a while put it goes away .

used motor oil will keep it from rotting for years. and give the wood a pleasant dark brown look after a few weeks.

you can cut it down with kerosene and spray it through a pump up sprayer.

of course it goes with out saying that this should be done out of doors and the wood will be fairly flammable until all of the kerosene evaporates away.

oh yeah, this will probably kill Californians, everything else does

All my best,
