Why does air need to be moist before reaching the lungs?

The oxygen diffuses into the alveoli in your lungs, and into the blood stream, via the fluids in the epithelial cells that make up the alveoli. If the air in your lungs were dry, it would impede diffusion, and prevent the red blood cells from getting enough oxygen during the trip through the lungs.
