Roland Deschain, the last of the Gunslingers, is on a quest to find the Dark Tower because legend has it that the Dark Tower is the nexus of all worlds and all universes in all times. His world has "moved on" since the rebellion that was started by John Farson, and Roland believes that his world is in danger of being destroyed. He also believes that the answer can be found in the Dark Tower. Does he reach the Dark Tower? Does he find the answer? You'll have to finish the book you're reading and read six more to find out, but it'll be worth it.

for a complete answer, you will need to read the whole series (it's amazing and shouldn't be too hard), but the short answer is that there are these beams that are holding the world together....all the beams connect at the tower, so it is kind of seen as the center of all universes...it is currently inhabited by a crazy "man" who wants to destroy the tower and therefore all the universes...roland is a mix between a knight of the round table and a clint eastwood character...it is his duty to save his world and in doing so he will save all the worlds...also, to read where stephen king got his inspiration, read the poem called "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" by Robert Browning...enjoy reading!

It is a quest Roland is on , he's heard about it since his childhood, and the man in black is his nemisis, it is like a race. His teacher often told him about the dark tower and how it holds all the answers in the world. Fantastic series.
