Politics plays a huge role, mostly because jews will actively support politicans that support Israel (or more importantly, will support those who run against people who support Israel).
This has little to do with a jewish conspiracy beyond that jewish americans are actually concerned about some place beyond here. The average school kid couldn't point out where Darfur is on a map, and probably would only be guessing as to what continent it's on.
So you have an active ally, with strong grass roots support in the states and seems to be our only ally in the region that isn't totally insane and teaching their children to hate along with their formula. Read the link to get an idea of what we're talking about. I'm not jewish, but I can see the need to support anyone who opposes the level of depravity and evil that many of the muslim cultures have stooped to.

To answer your question would take several pages, but here goes. It is a combination of all three. Religion first because Israel is God's chosen country, the people His chosen people. For more info read KJV ,Revelation. America was founded by christian people, with christian values and belief in God. As you read and learn about Isreal you will understand that the founding fathers of the United States stood behind Israel and as christians felt compassion for God's chosen., as we still do. Politics: Our leaders are compassionate today, as well. Money: If we don't help them, who will? They have every right as a country to live in peace, as do all countries.

Because without our support, the Israelis would be wiped off the map. What other country is constantly threatened with total destruction and genocide?
Other countries in similar situations probably aren't democracies, but I'm not really aware of any similar situation.

Isreal is the only area we can get into to see what's going on with the other countries and we have lots of oil interests there. Also, it is the only democratic nation in the middle east. It's extremely important because it's a symbol of modern civilization.

We aid Israel because it's our only stable foothold in the Mid-East.
Your original question stated "There seems to be a double standard here because lots of other countries suffer from the same situation...".
Name those "Lots of other countries" please, there aren't any. Israel needs and deserves our help, and no, I'm not Jewish.

Israel has a lobby in Washington that is fully funded by the Israeli government. Follow the money. The U.S./Israeli foreign policy relationship is a joke and is why they are in such danger in the first place. We back them, they mistreat their neighbors, and enemies and terrorists are given a cause.
