Bacteria get nitrogen from the air. I know, because I had to memorize the whole nitrogen cycle. Symbiotic bacteria are part of a process called nitrogen fixation. They have some nitrogenase enzyme that reduces gaseous nitrogen from the air to produce ammonia, which is further converted to make organic compounds.

N2 + 8H+ + 8e- + 16 ATP → 2NH3 + H2 + 16ADP + 16 Pi (Pi is an inorganic phosphate)

some bacteria are called nitrogen fixing bacteria and live in nodes on the roots of plants such as legumes, alfalfa. They can covert N from the atmosphere into compounds that the plant can then use to build things like proteins. Plants cannot use atmospheric nitrogen directly from the air.

um, I'm guessing the air since it's got a lot of nitrogen in it.
