Place this event in a long line of greed and deception that is the Roman Catholic...why is anyone surprised?

Actually, I think you've got it backwards.

The film's producers probably wanted to cash in on the same crowd who made Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ" such a big ticket-seller, and I'd guess they arranged the Vatican première as a publicity stunt.

I did find it rather strange the Vatican, of all places, was showing a move premier.
