The longer a computer stays on, the longer it builds up dust inside, which can reduce cooling efficiency of the cooling fans. Heat buildup can destroy the electronic components, especially memory and the CPU. Cleaning the inside by vacuuming it out regularly will help.
The disk, assuming it doesn't do an auto powerdown, will have a shortened lifespan.
Most modern monitors do go into sleep mode, so that shouldn't matter.
Staying on all the time does, to a very small degree, age the circuitry.
There is a power savings in turning them off.
I see little advantage to leaving it up 24/7, other than not waiting for bootup and shutdown.
If you have it connected to a surge suppressor strip, then turning off the strip, as well, provides some protection from lightening strikes. The strip itself can't handle a major voltage spike, like you will see from lightening. Of course, a modem would be an additional point of voltage spike with lightening, one the powerstrip won't help.
There will be a small amount of power going through part of the system when it's powered down, but still has power to the plug, but most of the circuitry will not be live.
Disadvantages exist if you are connected to the internet 24/7. You would need a good firewall and virus protection software.

Actually, everyone is wrong. The best solution for any computer is to leave the computer on 24/7. See, most people don't know even if your computer is off, the computer's components is still running electricity through it to keep the circuitry alive! Unless you have the power plug removed from the computer. If you continously turn off your computer, you increase your chance of frying your motherboard in any components. Read the fine print from the computer manufacturer. It will tell you the same information I'm providing. I know it may be hard to understand the logic behind this, but its just the way it is! Most computer now a days have energy saving components, turning off your computer doesn't mean your saving power!

There has been lots of debate over this for years. One side of the coin is if you leave your computer on you are wearing it out and shortening it’s lifespan (fans, HD, components) With the new power management systems I don’t think this holds true.
Some folks think that if you turn your computer off and on you shorten the life of the electrical components because the parts expand and contract with power/heat. I don’t know if this is true or not – maybe it was more of a truism in the old days.
My personal opinion is you should turn off your computer overnight. Besides it’s always nice to have a clean boot to work with.

Well, advantages are its ready to go at any time.
Disadvantages: 1) high energy usage/waste, what's the point in it being on if your not going to use it e.g. at 4am.
2) Depending on what operating system you have it can help if run quicker to turn it off more often e.g. Windows XP benefits from being turned off as processes can be left running in the background from programs that failed to close properly, slowing it down (not much but over time it can have an effect).
For me cons outweigh the pros.

If you are not using the computer, you have the following advantages if you TURN OFF
1. Save energy.
2. Reduce unnecessary disk usage. (yes disk may be used even if the computer is idle.)
3. Monitor life

You don't have to turn it off at night, but it is more secure that way. Turning on and off a computer can put light stress on the hard drive when it is first starting up or shutting off, but no so much that you should consider it. There is no real definitive answer, it's up to you.

Yes this is an advantage....Your computer needs to rest. ALso running your computer non-stop it will crash causing you to lose any unsaved information. Running your computer non-stop will make your computer run slower and later crash. ALso your electric bill will be higher, or if speaking in terms of a labtop the battery will die continusly,.

I do. Saves on the electric bill and also helps the computer. Your hard drive has fans that turn on to cool the inside. If you leave it on all the time you're just drawing dust (and pet hair if you have any) into the drive.

You can leave it on 24/7 if you want, it burns a lot of electricity though. You just need to restart it at least once a month to reset Windows' internal timer.

It's a personal thing. I turn mine off every night. (Been pcing for 17 years). Saves electricity and gives pc a chance to rest and cool down. Everyone has different opinion.
Hope that helps.
