I took a world history honor course at my high school last year and I didn't like it. The readings and work was easy but I hated the class discussions. My teacher expected us to know the answers; he would randomly pick on students to answer questions. Are history college courses like this? Do teachers have a lot of challenging discussions?

When you sign up for classes, talk to students who have had your professor before - they know what to expect from the professor and can give you and idea as to what you should know.

The degree of difficulty for History courses (or courses of any discipline for that matter) depends on the school and, more importantly, on the professor. Overall, professors determine the class format (e.g. group discussion, lecture/discussion, lecture, etc.), so, as Richard recommended, ask around to see if anyone has taken a specific course with a specific instructor.

Also, there may be a Myspace group for your college or university. On these group pages, there is an option of grading professors--you can bet an idea of what a professor is like by checking out the comments posted.

Plus, a more direct way would be to visit or call a professor of a course you're interested in to find out what course materials are used and what format she or he uses in class. I've done this a few times, and professors are usually more than willing to fill you in (although it may depend on the size of your school).

I like history so my class was super easy for me. I like stories and finding out how things happened and why. If you're good at English classes and a right brained person you'll be fine. Good luck!

In my opinion, they're not hard. Most entail a good bit of reading comprehension and an ability to memorize people and events. Some courses also require research papers. I didn't think they were *hard* just tedious.

It completely depends on the school.
