After reading all of the answers before mine, I am shocked at the lack of empathy in our society. So many people are so quick to say the old "Permanent fix for a temporary problem" or "weak person" it is unbelievable. A person who commits suicide is a person who is in unbelievable pain - either physical, but probably moreoften mental. It is a person who is being pummelled along with the rocks at the bottom of the fast moving river of life who is unable to get a stable hold on anything for long enough to figure out which way is up. You talk about the hotlines and meds and people seeing counsellors, but what if they don't help (if there are people like most of you on the other end, I could see how a suicidal person would feel like no one understands them and would be pushed further towards suicidal behavior). A person who commits suicide feels there is no longer a place for them in the world, that they don't belong here, and that there presence causes nothing but trouble to those around them. So don't go with the weak or selfish route because they are anything but. The fact that they see themselves differently from how their friends do and that they weren't able to get enough support from the support systems that we have in time to show them that other people think they still have a place in this world and that they still have choices is very sad. It appears that despite the talking about mental illnesses and depression we still have a long way til most of society even begins to understand what the true implications of having depression or another mental illness really are.

Maybe it isn't a question of "weak or strong", as more as a person in need of a hand. When people commit suicide, they leave behind family or friends that may feel such grief or even, guilt that they might never recover from it. You might call suicide a selfish act for leaving behind such despair.

On the other hand, I've have been suicidal (everyone has thought about it, I suppose) from severe physical pain and fatigue. Luckily, my doctor recognized this and pointed out that I couldn't do this. Thank goodness and I really just need someone to acknowledge my pain and help me. Nowadays, there are too many hot lines, churches or doctors that will help you if you need it.

My best friend's dad shot himself when I was 17, his family all drifted into lives that were not very productive at all. Although he was a good man, I always thought he was very selfish for leaving his family to sorta "rot" like that. The "Serenity Prayer" can work wonders at your darkest times. Choose life.

Personally I think weak, a stronger person would possible be better displaced to deal with the reasons behind contemplating suicide in the first place

Whilst I believe weak there is always other issues to take into account, however it is the trail of absolute devastation that the individual leaves behind them that more upsets me.

There is always reasons "whilst the balance of their mind" etc that gets quoted but I feel that if the concequences of their contemplated action was considered for a split second many would perhaps reconsider.

Absolute and endless devastation left behind for others to deal with. Hardly the action of a strong individual.

That question indicates a total mis-comprehension of the problem of suicide. A suicide is neither strong or weak. He or she is in serious pain: physical, emotional or both. Many suicides are never intended to go "all the way". Unfortunately, few people fully grasp the risk of the method they choose and accidentally kill themselves when they're attempting that most dramatic gesture in a desperate cry for help.
If you think in terms of "strong" or "weak" regarding a suicide attempt, please stay away from the person who may be contemplating it; you won't be of help, that's fer sure.

Strong NO, weak NO, Selfish YES.
They do not think about the people they are leaving behind and the anguish, hurt and grief those close to them will feel!!!!!
I've faced times in my life when suicide felt like the only solution! I was weak a couple of times and tried to do it. It needed no strength I found it easy to plan the where, when and how.

The answer is not a matter or strenght or weakness, The question should be why do some people end their life? there are many possible answer for just this one question. Usually, a person that commits suicide has lost his/her purpose and does not see the meaning of life... read "The Search for Meaning" by Victor Frankl. I hope it's not you, or someone you love that maybe thinking of it...take care!

A person who commits suicide is weak. It takes a strong person to deal with life. It has ups and downs. Honestly some people have it harder than others but what that person needs to know is that God never gives you more than you bear. If you just hold on and have faith eventually you'll have a sunny day.

I think it's desperation that drives a person to attempt suicide, I don't think they are weak as i don't believe it is an easy way out, it can take determination to actually go through with it so if you see that as a strength then yes, i guess it does take a certain strength to top yourself.
