The Octopus and Squid are carnivorous Mollusks that belong to the Cephalopod family. There is a web site called the cephalopod page that is very informative. It's address is http://www.thecephalopodpage.org. You'll find that the squid and octopus belong to the same order of animal, but their genus and specie classifications are different. the squid is classified as Teuthoida Cephalopoda Heteroteuthis Sepiolidae, if they produce luminous ink, or Heteroteuthis Loliginidae, if they don't. Such as the squid found on the North Atlantic Coast. The giant squid is classified as Architeuthis Architeuthidae. Octopus, on the other hand, Belong the the order Octopoda. The common octopus is Octopoda Octopus Vulgaris, The Atlantic Pygmy Octopus is Octopus Joubini, and the White Spotted Octopus is the Octopus Macropus. All the octopus belong the family Octopodidae. Hope that answers your question.

Squid and octopus are not in the same family. They are in the same class Cephalopoda and the same phylum Mollusca. You see taxonomically it goes Domain, Kingdom, Phylum (or Division), Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species. Same class and phylum, different order, family, etc.
