I do recycle personally; even though some places make it an absolute pain to do so.
One place I lived, they had a "recycling" place. However, in order to use it, you had to go when it was open, which was only one Saturday a month for two hours. Then you had to take all the recycling you had piled up during that time and seperate it yourself.
It was sometimes too much to handle, especially because I used to have to travel some weekends, so sometimes I would have to make two or three trips to deliver all my two or three months worth of recylycing... which even if you wash it out at home before storing it... didn't exactly smell nice.
Where I am now they actually take it all curbside once a week (the same day as trash)... which is SO nice. Another place I lived you had to take your own garbage to the town "dump" If you didn't recycle (or volunteer at the recycling station at least once a year) you were given quite a hard time. It was a small New England town, so they really did care and worked hard to recycle.
Towns and cities need to make it easier, and people will just catch on. Then they won't remember what it was like not to. Change takes time... but you have to make it a little easier for people.

Well really because it isn't worth it.
I mean the only recyclable material that is cost effective is Aluminum, which is why they give you money to recycle it. It is also more beneficial environmentally.
Paper on the other hand, when recycled is still a production process that leaves the toxic sludge of trying to remove the old ink and print, which must be disposed of.
Overall a lot of recycling contains just as much processing in the form of getting the material back into a usable state and remaking it, as well as shipping it back and forth between the factories. So it isn't saving the use of co2, factories, or machinery.
Since we're not having a shortage of plastics, paper (due to tree farms), etc so it isn't worth it for companies to put extra money into recycling (which is why there's no money in recycling plastics, bottles, paper...they can get it cheaply and at a better quality).
Landfill reclamation has also been a success and not caused the problems many have feared. Living in New York you see many of these places as parks, etc. The regulations are plentiful now days.
I'm not saying people shouldn't recycle, but that we should stop subsidizing recycling and make them actually make the processes of recycling productive and worth doing financially and environmentally. Then more people would recycle and it would benefit everyone more.
Oh and I wouldn't consider solar power recycling. But we should pursue ultimate sources of power.

Sadly enough, it is just out of sheer habit and a touch of lazinesss, I guess. I personally don't see what's so hard about throwing glass, plastic, and aluminum in a separate container and leaving it for the recycling truck next to the regular garbage. But many people won't do it...some say it doesn't make that much difference, especially if just one person does it. But I say, "change starts at home" and "start with the man in the mirror". I recycle in my home religiously.
When it comes to alternative fuels, the answer is Money my dear. Oil companies have all of their manufacturing equipment and money wrapped up in fossil fuel production, and it's not an easy thing to change. There are many things to be considered: job loss for those who work in that industry, new scientific discoveries that need to be made to bring production of new fuels to a mass scale, and finally, politics.
So, keep hoping and telling people what you think. I will too and hopefully, it will make a difference.
