The state is going to take my sister-in-laws child away. I understand that family gets first shot at temporary custody. So although just married we are considering taking on this baby. Is DYFS going to do a home study? Are they going to require checkups for us? Do we get any help from the state (money wise, or formula or diapers?)Are they going to drug test? Is it just like foster care and do we have to go through all the same requirements?

I'm sure they'll do some sort of testing or home study. They're not just going to hand the kid over. I think it's really great that you're willing to do this. Your sister in law is blessed to have someone like you and your husband. I hope all works out well..God bless :-)

I have been thru this before, they will want you to take parenting classes and everything. They will also run a back ground check and do a home study and there might be other requirments that they will want. The longer they are in foster care the harder it will be for anyone to get them, so act now. Call the social worker that is in charge of the case. Im hoping that you dont live in a differnt state because then everything will take alot longer to do. The state does offer finical aide, it depends on them if you will get it. But they do have a clothing allowence that they will get from the state. Most of the time they will pay you for provding transporation to doctors appoinments. I would try to adopt them because the state had the right to go in anytime and remove the children and place them in a differnt home. Good Luck!

as a social worker not with working with kids although I have some experience in this field u would get temporary custody a home visit will be done and if you need assistance usually the state will give you money to take care of the child in need and you would get some assistance there are usually no drug test for you unless the social worker suspected that you were using the state money for drugs and not for the child at hand the only check ups they would do is to make sure that the child is healthy and happy are you taking them to the DR to get their shots etc and the foster care worker assign to your case would let you know what is needed and go from there good luck to you

you will have to pay legal fees but if your sister signs the baby over to you chances are you can get temp, custody. you can put the baby on wic and get a med.card. i know first hand cause i had to sign my daughter over to my mom and she had to pay legal fees and then the only thing she could get was wic and med. you could always go to the srs office and see what help you can get on money wise
