A very good chance because of its high profile. There are only about 50 reactors capable of making the isotope, and it can be narrowed down to a few based on impurities and isotope mix. I'm willing to be patient, and I'm surprised they got this far this fast in the investigation. Polonium was chosen because it is virtually undetectable, but its rarity makes it more easily traceable.

Well, as someone who spent the evening in a hotel bar, sitting a couple of tables away from the gentleman that died, I'm a little concerned that I don't have all the facts. But NHS Direct were very calm about things and I'm of the impression that if you don't have direct contact with the substance you should be OK.

As to how the stuff got into the country, it had to get in somehow. I just find it hugely surprising that with the so-called stringent security, someone managed to smuggle enough Polonium to irradiate the planes, kill a man and pollute half of London, without being spotted. Scary - it's all a bit surreal, really.

You already have good and correct answers above.
I would only like to add that there are political and
commercial interest in play (example crude oil) and
this will play a primary role in any solution taken. Not
that I believe that Pres.Putin should interfere directly
but he certainly has the the upper hand and can have
some underdog do the dirty work for him.

There are too many actors in this play so the chances of finding out is absolutely zero. For instance. maybe he was a Russian agent with a hit list he has been working with and he was found out by the CIA and bumped off?

Do you really think the U.K. government is going to cover for Putin if he is involved? I think that British authorities will investigate this fully. It's possible the perpetrator has covered his tracks so well that they'll never trace it back to him. But I am sure the U.K. will find out everything they possibly can.
