I'm of the opinion that it depends on the vastness of the difference in the genres of music. I've rarely met a person who's into country that ever listens to classical or opera. I can't get with opera. With the exception of Andrea Bocelli, that guy's got some pipes I tell ya.

I like almost every kind of music so whatever my partner or my friends like is usually fine by me. I don't think that having the same tastes in music is very important at all unless both people are working in the industry & that causes a conflict of interest professionally which would certainly cause personal problems as well.

Music is very important to my partner and I'm happy to say that I kept an open mind and have experienced a much larger musical world then I ever would have otherwise known. While our musical tastes now overlap most of the time, there are still significant areas where we diverge. He thinks he'll eventually win me over entirely, but I'm not so sure - and the truth is that it doesn't really matter because we always have fun together.

No. I have been with my wife for 4 years and she is into Hard Rock and Punk music, while I prefer Latino music and a more Island/Reggae sound. Very different, but a match made in heaven.

No. We like most of the same stuff, but I pick on him cos he likes more girlie music than I do. There's a lot more important things you need to agree on than music.

Not everything has to be the same, but when driving in the car it should be a shared music because it is extremely annoying to drive somewhere listening to something you don't like. I dated a guy who liked this bizarre underground kind of metal and I thought it sounded like s**t. It was pure torture to ride in his car because I wanted to kill myself before we reached the destination, even if it was 10 minutes away!!

Not really- I'm from Chicago and I had a b/f from Nebraska once. He listened to some country, which I don't listen to, but as long as we could compromise that I wouldn't have to sit through all of his music, or vice versa, it was fine.
