Your question is extremely interesting for several reasons. First of all to answer your question, no, Cal Ripkin Jr. is on a different plain of baseball existence that McGwire. Cal did it the right way and that makes all the difference. McGwire took "Andro", among other HGH prior to the drugs being banned. He admitted that in 1998 during a TV interview while pursuing Maris's record. The problem I have is this.Whether the drugs were legal or illegal, McGwire knowingly took them, to take unfair advantage of his peers. That is without honor as far as I'm concerned. He should never be allowed in the hall of fame. The integrity of the game is at stake and it's time the sports writers association be held accountable come the January vote.
The other aspect of McGwire getting into the hall would be what could only be considered a very uncomfortable situation in Cooperstown at the induction ceremony. Can you imagine what that would be like? How many hall of famers would actually show up knowing this guy cheated his way to Cooperstown? And how about his acceptance speech? Who would he thank, Squibb laboratories for the chemically enhanced home runs?
I plan to attend the induction ceremonies in August because I've been a big fan of both Ripkin and Tony Gwynn. I'd hate to see the weekend spoiled by the presence of Mark McGwire.

yeah, he meets the eligibility requirements, a career of over 10 years and hasn't been playing for the last 5. That's all it takes to get on the ballot a first time. After that there is a certain percentage of votes you must recieve in order to remain on the ballot unless, of course you get selected for the hall.
and what does his charecter have to do with anything. Ty Cobb is in the hall of fame and from all reports was a complete and utter jerk, beat on his wife and everything.
as far as drug use goes, I know of no test in which he tested positive, I also know that even if he did take every steriod on the market at the time he played, he didn't break any of the many rules that major league baseball has.
If he's not a first ballot hall of famer, the baseball hall of fame is nothing more than a joke. But keeping Pete Rose out leaves it in that category as well, in my humble opinion.

He deserves to be on the ballot but if he must get in, he should wait a year or two becuase he's not a 1st ballot HOF'er and becuase we need more evidence of his innoncence or lack therof.
Atleast Cal Ripken and my fav, Tony Gwynn are going into the HOF 1st ballot!

He does not deserve in the Hall but like I always say there ought to be three Hall of Fames anyway. The Hall of Fame reserved for Cal Ripken, Hank Aaron, the Babe. The Hall of Really Really Good...Robin Yout, Kirby Pucket, and the Hall of Good...Sosa, Matthews, etc. You ever notice that only guys who hit mammoth home runs even count anymore, it is the stupiest play in baseball and that is all people care about. This is why I hate baseball anymore.

The waiting era of 5 years replaced into set to allow time for the participant's skills to be judged on their own benefit and not interior the emotion that usually accompanies a participant's departure from the activity. A participant can proceed to be on the pollfor as much as fifteen years until he attracts decrease than 5 % of the vote, then he's dropped.

I can't wait until BALCO Barry Bonds is eligible! Not to mention Rafael Palmeiro! The controversy, the controversy!
Hell, Jimmie Foxx was only on 79.2 % of ballots and he has to be considered one of the most feared hitters of all time.
Eleven of the 15 Hall of Famers with 500 homers were elected on the first ballot. The exceptions were Mel Ott (third ballot), Harmon Killebrew (fourth ballot), Foxx (fifth ballot) and Eddie Mathews (sixth ballot).

At first, you spelled his name wrong.... and second, the only reason that he is on the same ballot as Cal Ripken Jr is that they retired in the same year.

McGwire needs to admit that he took steroids and forget about the hall of fame. Other than home runs his numbers were average at best.
