In an effort to totally dominate the Sneaker/Athletic Shoe market Nike did buy Converse. This happened in 2003. Nike bought legendary basketball shoemaker Converse for $305 million.

Converse, formerly the dominant force in the basketball shoe market from its start in 1908 until the emergence of Nike's Air Jordan in the 1980s, North Andover, MA-based Converse had afllen on hard times recently, they filed for bankruptcy protection on 2001.

I suppose Nike owes a debt of gratitude to His Airness?
