Oracle - and Microsoft's SQL Server - are good for large scale (think web based or Wide-Area-Network) database applications. Access is good for SMALL scale - single computer, or very small, local area network database applications. Also, an Access database can't have very many users logged in at the same time. SQL Server and Oracle can have lots of users logged in at once.

It runs on other platforms besides Windows, so it offers the opportunity for much more security.
