Hey Alex,

HMS Ark Royal was arguably the first modern aircraft carrier, according to Wikipedia. But the qualifying word 'modern' leaves room for other interpretations about what an Aircraft Carrier is. Does it carry baloons, or did it carry Aircraft, but could not launch. The articles I found do not say Romania.

first we have to define the definition of a aircraft carrier = it is a ship where a aircraft can depart and land on a landing track witch is permanent piece of the ship.
This is because there where experiment with air plains that could start from a decking which where temporary ( the first take off in 1910 of pilot Ely from the USS Birmingham ) and many other attends.

the first carrier is the HMS the Royal Ark from the English navy laid down as a merchant ship but converted to a airplane / seaplane tender on the stocks she was put into use in 1914 the airplane couldn't land on the ship so it isn't completely a aircraft carrier.
This is don by the HMS Hermes 1923 but the Japanese navy was the first to launch a aircraft carrier the Hosho in 1922 but his layout was based on that of the Hermes which was only a bid slower build at the shipyard

I did not find anything about that but Romania is not a sea power so I dought it.

If you ask for the first real aircraft carrier : it is the UK. More information see Wikipedia.

I agree with Rustskipper - if the definition of 'aircraft carrier' is a vessel that has as its mission to launch and land heavier-than-air aircraft (airplanes), then Ark Royal, launched in 1914, was the first aircraft carrier. In the US, it was USS Langley, in 1920.
