LMFAO...I just love it when potheads try to legitimize an illegal act by quoting names of famous people who've done it....like that makes it noble somehow. And then the "medical" arguments come out after that..."it helps me sleep, it cures my headache, it cures my nausea". What a load of BS! That's not why you smoke it, and you know it. I knew someone who had become addicted to cocaine, and his excuse was that "doctors use it before surgery so they can clear their mind and concentrate"! And how did this person get started on the road to addiction? Pot. Yes, some physicians prescribe it to some people who are undergoing chemotherapy, have glaucoma, etc, but the type they prescribe isn't the kind you buy from the dude in the alley.

Others try to excuse it by saying that "there are other countries where it's legal". True...and those countries' leaders believe that a "high" populace is an easily controlled and manipulated populace, and they are... thus they allow it to occur. And, as a by product, the incidences of suicide, HIV from IV drug use, and other related problems are substantially higher in those countries as well.

If you want to get high, get high...but stop with the excuses and attempts to try to legitimize it. Marijuana is mainly just a way for lazy, unmotivated, and addictive personalities to escape their problems, or a way to find a reason to not deal with life in general. It's also a gateway drug to harder stuff, and sellers of it often lace it with other substances to make it more addictive, and/or introduce the user to harder stuff. And that's not just my opinion, it's proven fact. So let's drop the pretense.

Why do some people drink a cocktail after work.

It relaxes and relieves some stress. I smoke pot, but I'm not a low life dead beat bum. I'm quite successfull so far in my life, and I have a great adventure ahead of me.

I just like taking that one puff after I come home from work, then take my dog for her nightly walk, and come back home, pick up my house then cook dinner, and do the dishes,

some people pop a beer after all that, I light a Joint.

Tziporrah B -
There are some of those types, but would you call a social drinker an alcoholic, no because they don't NEED the alcohol to function, they7 only enjoy maybe going to the bar with some co - workers, or tipping the glass for a celebration.
I' smoke yes, but addictive personality, no.
I don't NEED it to relax, it's just nice.

a salve for the broken hearted...
I smoke pot because it makes me feel good. period.

It cures headaches and nausea instantly, and helps me go to sleep. I have suffered from insomnia and headaches since i was a child.
But. you are speaking of the great mystery, the property of ganja, the feeling of spiritual...connectedness.
It is bizarre. look up www.erowid.org for more information on the relationships between humans and psychoactives.

Rastafarianism is an entire religion built on the belief that marijuana can induce a spiritual state of truth, and the religion encourages its followers to meditate and seek truth.

sometimes i fall into a feeling of hopelessness.
i feel like the weight of life is too much to bear. this is one type of depression, and it stems from my realization that our world is one fcked up place. I smoke to relieve these feelings, feelings that i had long before i started smoking pot.
usually it works. sometimes it does not.
i was on lexapro and effexor for two years in high school, and it never fully relieved these symptoms, even with higher dosages.
pot almost always works.

one interesting fact to note- the vast majority of musicians smoke or have smoked pot many times in the past, including Louis Armstrong, the Beatles, Dave Matthews, Willie Nelson, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, etc. etc. etc.

edit:
answerman, it goes a little deeper than "legitamatizing" an illegal act. (BTW where i live in Colorado, the penalties for speeding are harsher than the penalties for getting caught with weed)
and sorry, you can't "lace" a plant.

the first illegal drug i ever did was ecstacy when i was 14.
i have been to rehab for the abuse of oxycodone and alcohol.
pot is not the same thing.
i make no excuse for this behavior. i have a problem with depression, and it will plague me on and off throughout my life.
this i have accepted.
i am not lazy or unmotivated, i have a 3.2 cumulative gpa in college, so in the end, you have proven yourself to be an ignorant prick.
thanks for sharing.

There are actually people who smoke it for pain, example cancer patients. But most people probably do it for fun and of course eventually can get hooked on it.

I think it is because they do not like feeling normally aware.
I know I don't smoke it (I did back in the day) because I prefer to feel normal and aware. I can't stand feeling fuzzy or not all here.

I think some people who habitually smoke pot are self medicating. Perhaps treating their own depression or other mental illness.

Because they don't know any better. They could achieve the same results without the negative side effects through meditation. Plus all that money they could use for better things.
