It's set at the end of the Mayan empire just before their demise, and features a cast of completely unknown actors who speak in the ancient Mayan dialect throughout the whole picture.

The similarity between aspects of the about-to-be-extinguished Mayan culture and aspects of American culture is pretty obvious political message. Gibson has also suggested that "sending guys off to Iraq for no reason" was essentially the same as Mayan human sacrifice.

So I think people are going to not watch it, but not just because they are leery of Gibson himself. They are not going to like the message too much and are not likely to want to watch a drama that is completely in subtitles. And let's not forget the graphic and disturbing violence which is going to be in the film.

Much of the actual story of the film is being kept under wraps, but it looks like it centres around a man captured by Mayans and taken to be sacrificed. He will then escape and, (as promotional material suggests) "make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life." Link below for more info.
