A q-tip
a slide
a microscope
Swipe the dogs ear canal and get some of the dirt out on the q-tip.
Smear it on the slide and look under the microscope to see if you see mites moving.
They are easy to spot and they move.
If you see them treat with over the counter meds or call your vet to get prescription meds.

Check to see if the dog is scratching his/her ears and shaking their head a lot. Then, look in the ear... if it looks like a filfthy ear then you can go to the vet and they have a treatment that they do right then. The ear mites will go away and you will not have to waste your time putting drops in everyday. Also, the vet will know how to get the medicine deep into the dog's ear without hurting them. I just went through this and it was easy.

If you just need to know if they have them you'll be able to see movement in the crud in their ear. Not nessecarily the mites themselves but movement. If nothing is moving but the ear smells very bad and/or the dog is scratching and shaking it's head it could be a yeast infection.
