An apparatus for reflux uses a round bottom flask for boiling the reaction contents and allowing the vapours to condense in a water cooled condenser attached vertically above the flask. The vapours condense and run back down into the flask in order for them to boil again.

It is a method for boiling a solvent, or mixture, under conditions of near constant volume without the need to "top up" the vessel with fresh solvent.
