For physical disasters, it is clearly floods in China. Estimates for the 1931 Yellow River flood are from one to four million deaths, and for the 1887 one from one to two million. Eight other natural disasters in historic times have claimed over a quarter of a million lives each.

Estimates for biological disasters go up to 300 million for the Black Death in the 1300's, and up to 100 million for the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918-19.
