We took the bumpers out of my daughter's crib when she was about three months old and had learned to turn over on her own. Now she is 8 months old, and is throwing all of her toys and her binky out at night and in the morning when she wakes up, plus I feel like they may block a bit of the draft (we live in an older house in it gets drafty at night). Is it safe to put them back in for now until she learns to stand up? I know they need to be back out then so she can't use then to climb up on...

Our pediatrician has told us that she is no longer at risk for SIDS since she can roll front to back and back to front, and that she is now alert enough to realize when she is unable to breathe.

My mom has had 6 children the oldest (me) I'm 21 and the baby is 10 and she always had bumpers in all of our cribs and she also put all of us to sleep on our stomachs or sides because back then thats what you were told to do and we are all still alive. My daughter is now 6 weeks old and at 1 month she was rolling over from her back to her stomach and my doctor told me that if she wants to sleep on her side let her. She also has a bumper in her crib. I know that babies have died of SIDS and I'm not doubting it...but I think that this is way overblown.

My son is 8 months old and he had bumpers in his cribs since day 1. He now stands up in his crib-- the bumpers keep him from banging his head on the crib at least 10 times a day. I know that I will eventually have to take the bumpers out......

They are a SIDS risk, in addition they make it easier for babies to climb out of the crib, as they can stand on them and be several inches taller. Falling out of the crip is not safe.

Personally I would never use them. There are other ways to prevent drafts and they are pretty useless at stoping older babies from bumping their heads.

well i wouldn't. they just are NOT safe. she is able to sit up and play with "tiny" things now with her hands. if she gets a hold of the ties that hold the bumper pads in place and then somehow gets the thing untied she can get wrapped up in it...or worse, if she accidentally pulls herself up and over the crib bars, she could hang herself on it.
slim chance i know....BUT it COULD happen.
if your worried about a draft bundle her up in a thicker set of PJ's.
better safe than sorry.

you are safe to put them back in now because when she rolls over at night they will protect her head from hitting the side of the crib

If used correctly they are fine. They are not a SIDS risk. Suffocation is not SIDS. Suffocation is the cause of death and SIDS is when the manner of death is undetermined. My daughter died of SIDS at five months.
